2013 by the numbers:
48% of the people we serve have at least one working member in their household. Many are single parents trying to raise their children on one income. Statistically, of children under age six in female-headed families, 59% are poor.
Children who eat breakfast every day will get higher scores in math. More than 50% of the students in Sarasota County are eligible for free and reduced lunches, and in DeSoto County, more than 90%. Feeding our children is something we can accomplish together, to make the future stronger, smarter, and safer for us all.
Many of the seniors who count on us for food must regularly decide between buying groceries or medication. More than 12,000 disabled veterans live in our area and often don't have enough to eat. We believe that if we take care of our community, our community will take care of us. Won't you join us?
